Cairns sits in the tropical north of Queensland, flanked by two UNESCO World Heritage sites — the Great Barrier Reef to the east and the Daintree Rainforest to the north. For backpackers, this creates a unique combination that no other Australian city can match: world-class natural attractions, year-round warm weather, a thriving hospitality job market and easy access to farm work for your 88 days.
Unlike Sydney or Melbourne, Cairns is small, walkable and genuinely backpacker-friendly. The city has been a WHV hub for decades, which means infrastructure for travellers is well developed — from cheap grocery stores to walk-in job opportunities to hostels that organise daily social events.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season (May–October) is peak backpacker season. Reef conditions are excellent, temperatures are comfortable at 22–28°C and the social scene is at its most active. The wet season (November–April) brings lower prices, fuller waterfalls and a quieter vibe — still excellent for most activities.
Climate
Tropical. Dry season May–Oct (best). Wet season Nov–Apr with afternoon storms. Always warm.
Getting There
Direct flights from Sydney (3hr), Melbourne (4hr), Brisbane (2hr). Cairns Airport is 15min from the city centre.
Getting Around
The city centre is walkable. For the Tablelands and day trips, rent a car or use tour operators.
Budget
AUD $60–90/day covers a dorm bed, groceries and one activity. More if you eat out every meal.
